Luke 13:1-35
Our reading today includes a call for repentance and a parable about a fig tree that hadn't grown any figs. part of the point Jesus is making in this section is that we do not know when our time will come. We do not know if something bad may happen to us, to our loved ones, to those around us. And so we are given this gift of time, however long it is, to bear fruit. The question is, what kind of fruit are we going to bear?
Jesus continues by upsetting the religious leaders again, and he performs a healing on the sabbath. Again, the point Jesus is making is that it is the people that are important, the relationships, and sometimes the ways the laws have been interpreted do damage to the relationships rather than enhancing them.
This chapter ends with Jesus predicting his own death. He is one his way to Jerusalem, a place the kills prophets, and he knows it is where he will be put to death as well. And he marches on.
